Streams Are the New Strategy

Last month, my former company laid off 28% of its staff.
And before I knew if I was safe or not—I went straight into planning mode.
Not panic. Planning.
Because I’ve learned this one truth over and over again:
Having multiple streams isn’t about doing the most. It’s about having options.
In that moment, I started asking myself the usual:
Should I start applying for jobs—just in case?
How long could we stretch what we have if needed?
What expenses can be cut immediately?
But then I started asking the questions that come from being a multi-hyphenate:
How many clients should we take on at Iconiq Lab?
What digital offers can I launch under Britney Jeanine?
Should my husband and I relaunch a fitness challenge through NU Flame Fitness?
Which local markets are open this summer for Aubrey Taylor handbags?
Now I know that might sound like a lot.
But for me? That’s strategy.
A reminder for you (and me):
Our peace doesn’t come from the streams.
Our peace comes from God.
But He’s given us the gifts and wisdom to prepare—and that’s what I lean on in uncertain seasons.
And get this...
I don’t wait for hard times to start building.
I stay building… so that when hard times do come, I don’t start from scratch.
Why I’ll Always Have a Backup Plan
Whether you’re a corporate professional, a business owner, or somewhere in between—depending on one stream in this economy is not the move.
I had a co-worker who got laid off last month—but he had a consulting business on the side and jumped right back in.
It wasn’t full speed, but it was enough to hold him over until his next open door.
And on the flip side?
I’ve had moments in business where things got quiet—and my 9–5 gave me breathing room to regroup without pressure.
Both streams served their purpose.
Not out of fear.
But out of wisdom.
Multiple Streams Aren’t Just for Corporate Folks
Let me be clear: this conversation isn’t just for people in the workplace.
Entrepreneurs need multiple streams too.
Because sometimes one offer isn’t enough. One audience isn’t enough. Or one business hits a slow season.
And you know what?
Sometimes another stream means another business.
Not a side hustle. Not an add-on. A completely new brand—with a new market, new purpose, and new income potential.
It might sound wild to some—but that kind of diversification has kept me steady.
But You Can Also Take It Slow
Now, your “Plan B” doesn’t have to be a massive empire.
It could be:
A class you teach twice a year
A product you sell during the holidays
A template or guide you release once
A service you offer to a few clients per month
Or a whole new business built from scratch with fresh vision
It’s not about building more to impress.
It’s about building smarter so you’re never without options.
Questions to Ask Yourself
If you’ve been circling the idea of starting or re-starting something, ask:
What comes easy to me but helps others in a real way?
What would I do even if no one clapped for it?
What’s something people already ask me for help with?
What’s one small offer I can release without pressure?
Is there a business idea I’ve been sitting on that’s ready to be born?
Let This Be Your Reminder
Whether you’re full-time, freelance, in-between, or figuring it all out—
A backup plan isn’t a lack of focus.
It’s a form of faith-fueled preparation.
And “building your own” doesn’t mean walking away from stability.
It means you’re giving your gift room to grow in multiple directions.
So if you’ve been waiting for a sign to activate what God already gave you...
This is it.
