Faith Over FOMO: Is being a Christian Boring?

When I made the decision to fully commit to Christ, I couldn’t help but think about all the things I thought I had to let go of—the turn-up, the smoking, the drinking, the gossip-filled group chats, the social scenes, and honestly, the whole vibe of “living it up.” I thought walking with Jesus meant I had to trade fun for faith—and I wasn’t sure I was ready for that kind of exchange.

But deep down, a question lingered in my heart: Is being a Christian going to be boring?

To be real, I feared people would stop inviting me out. I worried they’d act weird around me or treat me like I was suddenly too holy to hang. My husband and I even had those deep “Are we really ready to go all in?” convos.

But the more I walked with God, the more I realized something: following Christ doesn’t kill your joy—it redefines it.

The Bible Gives Room for Joy & Celebration

Joy, celebration, and community? They're not off-limits—they’re encouraged.

  • In John 2, Jesus’ first miracle was at a wedding celebration, where He turned water into wine—not to encourage a party lifestyle, but to bless a gathering with joy.

  • Psalm 16:11 says, “In Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

  • In Acts 2:46-47, believers gathered daily, breaking bread “with glad and sincere hearts.” They didn’t live in isolation—they built joyful, life-giving community.

So no, God’s not trying to snatch the joy. He’s inviting you into a version of it that doesn’t leave you empty the next day.

Redefining the Turn-Up

What I once saw as fun—nights that ended in regret, habits that numbed me, conversations that pulled me down—wasn’t joy. It was distraction.

Now?

  • House parties? Still my vibe... with good clean fun!

  • Lounges? Give me all the mocktails with the same upscale experience.

  • Music? Car dance sessions to Forrest Frank and Alex Jean—and okay, let me not lie... some 90s hip hop & R&B still gets airplay.

  • Girl talk? Deep convos that stir my spirit, not just my tea.

I realized that the Kingdom is not void of culture—it is a culture. And it's one that celebrates wholeness, peace, creativity, laughter, and yes, community.

From FOMO to JOMO (Joy of Missing Out)

I used to worry about what I’d miss out on in the world. Now I ask, What would I miss out on if I didn’t follow God?

It’s not a boring life—it’s a bold one. Not a restricted life—but a protected one. Not an isolated life—but one rooted in purpose.

And I’m not alone. So many people in my circle are walking similar paths—still full of joy, full of life, full of style… just anchored differently.

Am I perfect? No. Do I still wrestle with things that used to call my name? Yes. But I’ve found better alternatives—ones that don’t compromise my peace or my convictions.

If you’re wondering whether following Jesus means you’re saying goodbye to your entire personality—hear me out:

You’re not giving up fun. You’re giving up what fakes it.

God isn’t trying to make you boring—He’s trying to make you whole.

And honestly? The pivot wasn’t just worth it… it was necessary. I’m not losing. I’m winning—every single day, with peace, joy, community, and God at the center.
